I made this for the Banner Saga fanart contest by Stoic Studio in 2018.
I always wondered why prince Ludin uses a spear and not a sword like his father. A sword would seem a more kingly weapon.
I imagined there must have been a day quite a while back, when he decided to oppose his father's expectations openly. Probably didn't do him much good then.
So my name for the picture became: Defiance
This is the corrected version. For the contest I accidentially forgot to activate one color adjustment layer for Arberrang ^^,
The picture took far too much time, about 40 to 50 hours. About a fifth of that went into the composition and early sketches. I knew the story I wanted to tell, but went through several iterations of composition and poses until I settled on this variation. After some fruitless hours of finding the right pose references, the program Daz3D helped me a bit with getting poses and perspective mostly right. I'm still not quite happy, but the portrait orientation of the page (instead of landscape) was an unexpected obstacle to my ideas. All the lineart was drawn with fineliners on paper, then put together and colored/shaded in Photoshop.
Persons in the picture: King Meinolf, some guy, Prince Ludin.
('some guy' was initially supposed to have more resemblance to Rugga, to indicate some kind of family relationship... but I wasn't sure when Meinolf and Rugga had their falling out.)
